After having his hunting buddy not make it on the plane Andy wasn’t going to let that ruin his trip.
After spotting this big boy earlier in the day before losing sight of him when he spooked into thick cover Andy just knew he was the stag he came for. We continued to search high and low all day until setting up on a hill to watch an area we thought he frequented each evening. Turns out we were wrong as we heard a roar up valley with only 3/4hr light remaining and then caught a glimpse of him at around 800yrds. Up we jumped and made hast for his position putting in a stalk to 15yrds leaving Andy to take the last 3 to present a clear shot.

Nothing like the pressure of fading light to force you into a “speed stalk”😬

After an eventful morning of looking over a number of large Stags and fallow bucks we thought it best to stop for a bite of lunch and discuss the many options and potential stags under the shade of native canopy.

While enjoying the break I showed Jake a short vid of a 450” stag I filmed in the area a couple of weeks prior I thought he might like……. Well, I’m not sure I’ve ever seen someone jump to their feet so quick! Before I could even finish the video he had downed his lunch, had gun in hand, his pack on his back and was pacing in circles egging us to get cracking and help find it.
“As we get closer to the area stay high and hug the track and we should catch him out on the bush edge feeding” I suggested. “We’ll only get 1x chance though as if he spots us he’ll dive into the thick cover where he’ll stay for the rest of the day so stay on the track so we have a flat shooting position and take the 1st chance on offer”. Proof that it pays to have a guide with in-depth knowledge of the area and the individual stag’s habits and territories as sure enough, after a bit of a hike across to the far valley, right where I predicted he would be, stood this monster of a stag. As if I had written an actual script the stalk played out exactly to plan with Jake taking the opportunity at a tad under 200yrds.

@nate.stumpf, wife Bri and team with a brute of a Red Stag.
After 1st hearing him roar we got eyes on this stag as he charged through the thick stuff towards a smaller stag who foolishly replied serve. Spooking everything in his way he finally came to a stop in a clearing where Nate took his chance and sent one his way. Pumped up on testosterone and adrenaline he ate the 1st shot like it was nothing so a 2nd lead injection was sent his way also finding its mark with another nice shot. Man was this guy tough….. dead on his feet he still managed to take off down the steep gut and into thick cover where we eventually found him “crash landed” on the edge of a bog. Was a good thing we had plenty of man power to drag him up onto firm ground where the work began to cape him, butcher and carry him out.

Nate displayed some nice shooting, great patience a cool calm composure and a bit of hard work to eventually secure his awesome stag, everything we could really ask for in a hunt. Well deserved bud and looking forward to our next hunt together.
